What is Fashion ?

The definition of Fashion given in Dictionary.com’s definitions is as follows:

  1. The prevailing style or custom, as in dress or behavior: one can be in or out of fashion.
  2. Something, such as a garment, that is in the current mode: a swimsuit that is the latest fashion.
  3. The style characteristic of the social elite: a man of fashion.
An art form to some, “fashion” is considered a religion by others with it’s zealots requiring a close allegiance to the prevailing fashion of the day. However, for most of us , it’s purely the process of using ones clothing, accessories and hair etc. to show (or hide) something about oneself.

One can use fashion for self expression and to also serve as an extension of one’s personality such as “sporty, romantic, traditional, classic, dramatic and/or trendy”.
You might even consider using fashion to disguise your true self such as
-  “a lamb in wolves clothing” or
-  “an enchantress in plain clothing”.
Fashion statements can be made with clothes, accessories, shoes, hair, makeup, even your cell phone.

So, who actually gets to decide ”what’s in”?

One of the greatest influences on fashion direction is the Designers.
Miuccia Prada of Prada and Miu Miu,
Marc Jacobs of Marc by Marc Jacobs.
Marc Jacobs and Louis Vuitton are considered directional designers (Prada for remixing classics, Jacobs for vintage-inspired styles).

BesThe press attend fashion shows presenting designer collections some five or six months ahead of the “season”. The media will then report on the trends that they believe will interest their readership. Store buyers in the same way will work many months ahead of the “season” placing orders with the various manufactures for those styles which they believe their customers will buy.
The “glitterati”, celebrities, socialites  and other trend setters, are normally the first to sport new looks which influence the public into accepting the emerging trends.

So in the end everyone, from big-name designers to the minor celebrities, influences  fashion’s future direction. However, ultimately it’s you, the consumer, with your purchasing power, who decides what is “in” when you choose whether or not to buy into a trend.
